Ilocos Sur Farmer Participated in Magsasaka Siyentista Training
STA. MARIA, Ilocos SurโMr. Jondel Ronda Cabanting, a farmer from Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, participated in a three-day training on Organizational Formation for Magsasaka Siyentista (MS) and Agri-Enterprise Management held from April 2-4, 2025, in Batac City. The training, organized by the Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Training Institute โ Regional Training Center 1 (DA-ATI-RTC 1) in partnership with the Ilocos Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium (ILAARRDEC), aimed to equip Magsasaka Siyentista with the skills to form organizations and develop sustainable agribusinesses. Cabanting, identified as a promising Magsasaka Siyentista in Ilocos Sur, represented a collaboration between DA-ATI-RTC 1, the Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC), and local farmers to promote technology-driven agricultural innovation. His participation highlighted the joint effort to connect scientific advancements with practical farming practices. As a farmer-partner, Cabanting played a key role in disseminating agricultural technologies to his fellow farmers in the province.

On March 26, 2025, the Municipality of Santa Cruz, Ilocos Sur, in partnership with the Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC), celebrated National Womenโs Month at the Sports Complex, focusing on transformative and community-centered activities. The event, themed โBabae sa Lahat ng Sektor, Aangat ang Bukas sa Bagong Pilipinas,โ highlighted the essential contributions of women to a progressive Philippines. ISPSC contributed by offering services like massages, haircuts, and manicures, showcasing its commitment to community empowerment and gender equality. The program included interactive symposiums on womenโs and childrenโs rights, led by local leaders, including Hon. Edgar D. Locquaio Jr., emphasizing social awareness and inclusivity. This collaboration highlighted the vital role of academic institutions like ISPSC in community development and addressing societal issues, reinforcing its position as a catalyst for meaningful change in the region.

The Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC) aimed to enhance its extension and community engagement programs by visiting two leading agricultural innovation institutions, Central Luzon State University (CLSU) and the Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PhilMech) on May 16, 2025. Led by Dr. Christian C. Gandeza, ISPSC's delegation sought to learn best practices and explore collaborative opportunities to strengthen its offerings in the Ilocos region. At CLSU, they engaged with Mr. Armando C. Lagasca, who shared innovative community engagement strategies, prompting discussions on their implementation at ISPSC. The team then visited PhilMech, where they discussed collaboration opportunities, including integrating ISPSC students into PhilMechโs communication platforms and the Youth for Mechanization (Y4M) campaign, which promotes modern agricultural methods to youth. ISPSC President Dr. Mario P. Obrero supported the collaboration, emphasizing its potential to connect knowledge with practical solutions for community benefit. This partnership aims to bolster ISPSCโs agricultural education and community services, leveraging the expertise of both CLSU and PhilMech.
